Long County Sheriff's Office Deputy Sheldon Gordon Whiteman died in the line of duty early Thursday morning.

Long County, GA – Long County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Deputy Sheldon Gordon Whiteman died in the line of duty early Thursday morning while assisting in a high-speed pursuit.

The incident began in Ludowici at approximately 3 a.m., when a local police officer spotted a motorist blowing through stop signs around the city, WTOC reported.

The officer attempted to stop the driver, who subsequently sped off down Highway 57 towards McIntosh County.

Along the way, 44-year-old Deputy Whiteman joined the pursuit.

As they raced down Highway 57, approximately one mile from Tibet Road, the deputy lost control of his patrol vehicle, WTOC reported.

The cruiser left the roadway and crashed into the woods, coming to rest approximately 100 feet into the wood line, WJCL reported.

Deputy Whiteman was rushed to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators later located the suspect’s abandoned vehicle on Gobbler Lane in McIntosh County, WTOC reported.

Another crash appeared to have happened at that location, but the suspect has not been located.

Liberty County Sheriff Steve Sikes said that a K9 tracked the suspect to a dirt road, where the scent was lost, WXIA reported.

Investigators believe that someone likely picked the suspect up and transported him away from the area.

Prior to joining the LCSO just four months ago, Deputy Long spent four years serving the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), WTOC reported.

“His smile was the thing that, you know, it represented him," CCSO Sergeant Julius Johnson said. "As soon as you see it, ‘hey boy!’ and just the flash of his smile, it’s like, you knew everything was good.”

Sgt. Johnson said that Deputy Whiteman was a “dedicated guy” who “loved his job.”

“He loved the people that he worked with and always willing to help,” the sergeant added. “He was always willing to help someone who was in need no matter what.”

Deputy Whiteman leaves behind his wife, Alisa, and his sons, 16-year-old A’ron, 13-year-old Arion, and 11-year-old Shiloh, the LCSO said in a press release.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Long County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sheldon Gordon Whiteman, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
