Lawrence County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Ainsworth and his wife, Paula, were killed when the storm struck their home.

Lawrence County, MS – Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) Deputy Robert Ainsworth was killed by a tornado that struck his home on Easter Sunday.

He died while attempting to shield his wife, Paula, from the violent storm, LCSO said in a press release later in the day.

The couple, who lived at a residence at the Walthall/Lawrence County line, were among 11 people who were killed by the severe weather, WMC reported.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Deputy Robert Ainsworth and his lovely wife, Paula,” the LCSO said. “We, at the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, would like to offer our most sincere condolences to the families of both of these fine individuals.”

Deputy Ainsworth, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was a longtime employee of the LCSO.

Paula served as a Walthall County Justice Court deputy clerk, and had previously served in the same capacity in Lawrence County.

The couple married on July 7, 2018, according to The Weather Channel.

“Robert left this world a hero, as he shielded Mrs. Paula during the tornado,” the LCSO said. “He was a very valuable employee and will be greatly missed. Please remember to pray for LCSO along with their families during this tragedy.”

“Rest In Peace, Brother,” the department’s post read. “We have the watch from here. Job well done, Sir.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Robert Ainsworth, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
