Hero Down: LAPD Officer Juan Diaz Murdered After Confronting Vandal
Los Angeles, CA - An off-duty Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer was murdered early Saturday morning after confronting a vandal.
The incident happened about 1 a.m. in the area of Avenue 26 and Humboldt St, according to LAPD.
Officer Juan Diaz was off-duty at a taco stand, standing in line for food with his girlfriend and her two brothers.
The officer saw a man vandalizing something nearby and confronted him. It has not been released if Officer Diaz identified himself as a law enforcement officer at that time, according to the Associated Press.
The vandal left the area after the confrontation.
That suspect later returned with a group of males and lifted his shirt to display a handgun.
The officer and his party tried to get in a car to leave the area, but the suspect opened fire on them anyway.
Officer Diaz was fatally shot, and another male victim was shot. The second victim is expected to survive.
The suspect escaped after the shooting and their locations and identities are unknown at this time.
Authorities believe that the suspects are associated with the Avenues gang.
Officer Diaz was a two-year veteran of the department and was assigned to the Professional Standards Bureau.
