Hero Down: Independence PD Sgt. Jason Young Killed By Wrong-Way Driver

Independence Police Detective Sergeant Jason Young was killed when a pickup truck crossed into oncoming traffic.

Independence, MO – Independence Police Detective Sergeant Jason Young was killed off-duty when the car he was driving was struck head-on by a wrong way vehicle.

Sgt. Young, 48, was one of two people killed in a three-vehicle crash that happened at about 5:45 p.m. on Jan. 2 in Gladstone, The Kansas City Star reported.

Gladstone Police Sergeant Rob Hayes said the wreck occurred after a westbound pickup truck crossed into eastbound traffic lanes at the intersection of North Walrond Avenue and Northeast 64th Street.

First, the pickup sideswiped and clipped another vehicle, The Kansas City Star reported.

Then it crashed head-on into Sgt. Young’s car.

The sergeant was driving his personal vehicle off duty when he was hit.

The driver of the pickup truck also died, but police have not released any details yet about what caused the crash because it is still under investigation, The Kansas City Star reported.

Sgt. Young served the Independence Police Department for 20 years, KSHB reported.

He also joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve in 2006 and earned the rank of lieutenant commander.

Sgt. Young deployed to Guantanamo Bay and Kuwait with the Coast Guard, KSHB reported.

He started his law enforcement career with the Independence Police Department in 1999 and worked in the patrol division, criminal investigations, the Jackson County Drug Task Force, and ultimately became a sex crimes detective in the special victims unit, The Kansas City Star reported*.*

“Sergeant Young had a distinguished career serving the citizens of Independence,” Independence City Manager Zach Walker said. “In particular, Sergeant Young was integral in the fight against human trafficking and sexual violence in his work with the department’s sex crimes unit. Our entire organization mourns this loss. Our hearts are heavy, but collectively we will heal.”

In November of 2019, Sgt. Young was credited with supervising a human and sex trafficking sting operation that netted 20 arrests and led to federal charges, WDAF reported.

"[Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault] advocates worked closely with him in his role as a sex crimes investigator and supervisor,” the organization posted on its Facebook page. “Sergeant Young persistently worked to protect survivors and keep our community safe. He will be greatly missed."

Sgt. Young will be buried with full military and police honors on Jan. 8, according to WDAF.

His family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Truman Heartland Foundation, which will use the money to purchase medical supplies for the Independence Police Department’s tactical unit.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Independence Police Detective Sergeant Jason Young, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
