Hero Down: Hughes County Sheriff's Deputy Seth Mason Dies Unexpectedly

Hughes County Sheriff's Office Deputy Seth Mason was found unconscious after a report of gunfire.

Seminole County, OK – Hughes County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Deputy Seth Mason died at his home on Dec. 9, after first responders found him unconscious inside the residence.

Emergency personnel responded to the home at approximately 10 p.m., after they received a report of “shots fired,” Hughes County Sheriff Marcia Maxwell and Hughes County Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) Director Kristy Lashbrook said in a joint statement.

“Upon arrival emergency responders found Deputy Seth Mason unconscious, at which time efforts were made to preserve life,” the statement read. “Those actions were ultimately unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

“At this time the cause of death is still under investigation and neither Hughes County Sheriff’s Office nor Hughes County Emergency Medical Services will make any further statement until the investigation has concluded,” the joint statement read.

Deputy Mason was hired by the HCSO just seven months ago, on his 21st birthday.

He was completing his academy training at the time of his death, according to his obituary.

The rookie deputy was also working as an emergency medical technician for the HCEMS, and had served in that capacity for over a year, according to his department.

He previously served as a firefighter for the city of Wewoka.

“We ask that you be respectful in this time of mourning for…Deputy Masons’ immediate family, his family within the emergency services community, and to the citizens of the communities he served as we all mourn this loss,” the joint statement read.

Deputy Mason leaves behind his parents, siblings, grandparents, and girlfriend, as well as many friends and extended family members, according to his obituary.

He was laid to rest on Friday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hughes County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Seth Mason, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
