Hero Down: Hudson Co. DOC Corrections Cpl. Bernard Waddell Dies From Coronavirus

Hudson County DOC Corrections Corporal Bernard Waddell served his department for 28 years.

Hudson County, NJ – Hudson County Department of Corrections (HCDOC) Corrections Corporal Bernard Waddell died on Wednesday after contracting COVID-19.

The 56-year-old corrections corporal served the HCDOC for 28 years, NJ.com reported.

The New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) announced Corrections Cpl. Waddell’s death in a press release on Wednesday.

“The State PBA is sad to announce the passing of Hudson County Correctional Police Officer Bernard Waddell, Sr.,” the PBA said. “Officer Waddell, an officer with 28 of service, passed away after contracting the Coronavirus.”

“His death is a grim reminder of the risks that our members face every day serving the public in the face of this pandemic,” the statement read. “We ask that you keep Officer Waddell’s family and colleagues in your prayers at this difficult time as we mourn his loss.”

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy described Corrections Cpl. Waddell as a “frontline hero” during a press briefing on Thursday afternoon.

“He was more than just an officer – he was a gentleman,” HCDOC Director Ron Edwards told NJ.com. “He’s going to be sorely missed in my department.”

Director Edwards said that Corrections Cpl. Waddell had trained approximately half of his fellow corrections officers during his nearly three decades of service.

“He was an individual that would help out any of my officers,” he told NJ.com. “He always had a great smile on his face and a kind word to offer someone. He made sure that everybody was safe.”

Corrections Cpl. Waddell leaves behind his wife, Sheila, and two children, according to The Record.

His son, Bernard, also serves as a law enforcement officer, WNYW reported.
