Hillsboro Police Officer Brad Maassen served his department for two years.

Washington County, MO – Hillsboro Police Department (HPD) Officer Brad Maassen died in an off-duty ATV crash on March 28.

An unnamed 10-year-old girl was also seriously injured in the collision, KSDK reported.

Officer Maassen and the child were traveling eastbound on Woodland Drive in a 2019 Can-Am Outlander at approximately 5:30 p.m., when the ATV traveled off of the roadway, slammed into a tree, and overturned.

Officer Maassen, 40, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

He was not wearing a safety device, according to KSDK.

The little girl was life-flighted to SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

Investigators said she was wearing a safety device at the time of the crash.

Further information regarding her condition was not available.

“It is with indescribable sadness that we announce the passing of one of our officers,” the HPD said in a Facebook post on March 29. “Brad had a passion for law enforcement and a genuine desire to serve.”

Officer Maassen joined the HPD in April of 2018.

“[He] was truly an asset to our agency,” the department said.

Officer Maassen was recently awarded the HPD’s Life-Saving Award, as well as several other departmental commendations.

“He had an eternally positive attitude, a great passion for helping others, and was proud of the uniform he wore,” the department said. “Brad will be missed greatly. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and coworkers.”

Officer Maassen leaves behind his fiancé, Kristy, his son, Eli, and his stepdaughter, Harmony, according to his obituary.

He is also survived by his parents and his sister.

Officer Maassen was laid to rest on April 3.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Hillsboro Police Department Officer Brad Maassen, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
