Hero Down: Harris Co. Deputy Omar Diaz Dies From Medical Emergency At A Stabbing

Harris County Sheriff's Office Deputy Omar Diaz served his department for 10 years.

Houston, TX – Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Deputy Omar Diaz died in the line of duty on Saturday, after he suffered a medical emergency at the scene of a stabbing.

Deputy Diaz, 39, was one of several HCSO deputies who raced to a home in the 7500-block of Stone Pine Lane after they received a report that a woman there had been stabbed multiple times, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Deputy Diaz collapsed while hanging crime scene tape, and began experiencing seizures, according to KTRK.

He was coherent and communicating with his fellow deputies prior to an ambulance arriving at the scene, but lost consciousness while en route to Northwest Hospital in Cypress, The Houston Chronicle reported.

Doctors were unable to revive him, and Deputy Diaz was pronounced dead at 8:22 a.m.

The exact cause of his death remains under investigation.

The victim of the stabbing is expected to survive her injuries, KTRK reported.

“Deputy Omar Diaz served his community with honor & distinction,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a Facebook post hours later. “The entire Harris County Sheriff’s Office family is grieved by the tragic loss of our brother.”

Sheriff Gonzalez said that the department is “very shaken” by the veteran deputy’s sudden and unexpected death, and that he was a beloved member of the HCSO, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Deputy Diaz joined HCSO as a detention officer in 2009, according to KTRK.

In August of 2018, he graduated from the sheriff’s office’s basic peace officer’s course, and was subsequently assigned as a patrol deputy in the Crossroads Park subdivision.

"His father was telling me that it was just always his dream to be a deputy," Sheriff Gonzalez told KPRC. "He worked extremely hard every step of the way – whenever there was another milestone that he needed to reach, another step that he needed to advance."

Deputy Diaz died while doing a job he loved, the sheriff said.

"We're out there to serve and protect, and that's exactly what he was doing – living his passion out there this morning when he was out assisting others," he added.

Deputy Diaz leaves behind his wife, his seven-year-old daughter, and his parents.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Omar Diaz, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.
