Hero Down: Erie Police Officer Michael Conway Dies After Falling Ill On Duty

Officer Michael Conway of the Erie Police Department died in the line of duty on Saturday night.

Erie, PA – Erie Police Officer Michael Conway died in the line of duty on Saturday, after he suffered a medical emergency at the police station and was unable to be revived, his department said.

Officer Conway, 46, was serving as the agency’s security officer at the station and was conducting his rounds in the building when he suddenly fell ill, Erie Police Chief Dan Spizarny told the Erie Times-News.

Just before 7 p.m., his coworkers summonsed an ambulance for someone in cardiac arrest.

Officer Conway was rushed to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Hamot, where he was pronounced dead at 7:59 p.m., the Erie Times-News reported.

The exact cause of Officer Conway’s passing was not immediately known, and an autopsy is expected to be performed on Tuesday or Wednesday, Erie County Deputy Coroner Nick Rekitt said.

“It is with great sadness that the Erie Police Dept. has to announce the loss of Officer Michael Conway # 334,” the Erie Police Department wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday. “Officer Conway was a dedicated 19-year veteran who was loved by the community he served and his fellow officers.”

Chief Spizarny said that Officer Conway was a “beloved” member of the department, and that it was going to be a “rough week” for the agency, WICU reported.

“He will be missed by everyone and the vacancy he leaves behind will never be filled,” the agency’s Facebook post read. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Conway family and friends during this difficult time.”

Prior to his assignment as the station’s security officer, Officer Conway previously served as a detective in the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division Burglary Unit. He was also a children’s advocacy detective, the Erie Times-News reported.

“He was a great officer and a good friend to many fellow officers, and he will be sadly missed,” Chief Spizarny said.

On Monday, Erie Mayor Joe Schember ordered the city’s flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the fallen hero, WJET reported.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Erie Police Officer Michael Conway, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
