Hero Down: Det. Michael Doty Succumbs To Injuries From Ambush Shooting

York County Detective Michael Doty was shot along with three other officers Tuesday morning.

York County, SC – York County Deputy Michael Doty succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, after being shot along with three other law enforcement officers Tuesday morning.

The incident began at 10:10 p.m. on Monday, when police were called to the home of Christian McCall, 47, in York, because he was assaulting his wife, WSOC reported.

McCall fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival, prompting a manhunt.

Just after 1 a.m., McCall shot a K-9 handler deputy. Another officer got the deputy into a patrol vehicle, and rushed him to a hospital.

Investigators then requested additional manpower to assist with the search.

McCall also fired at a helicopter that was searching for him, WSOC reported.

The helicopter was hit, but police said that no one inside was injured.

At approximately 3:30 a.m., McCall ambushed the responding SWAT team, shooting two YCSO deputies and one YPD officer.

McCall was shot in the gunfight and suffered non-life threatening injuries before being taken into custody.

Authorities said the suspect had several "long guns," according to the Associated Press.

The wounded officers were identified as Sergeant Randy Clinton, Sergeant Buddy Brown, Detective Mike Doty, and Officer Kyle Cummings.

York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson announced at around 7:44 p.m. Wednesday night that Detective Doty had succumbed to his injuries.

The other officers are in stable condition.

A GoFundMe page was sent up for the officers after they were shot.

Detective Doty had worked for the sheriff's office since 2006. He was a Law Enforcement Officer Narcan (LEON) program coordinator and on the York County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit and SWAT team, according to WCNC.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Detective Doty and the other wounded officers. Godspeed, sir, we will take the watch from here. Thank you for your service.

Detective Daniel Doty, your life mattered.
