Colorado Springs Police Officer James "Jamie" Palaia served his department for 13 years.

Colorado Springs, CO – Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Officer James “Jamie” Palaia died in an off-duty motocross crash on May 14, according to his department.

The 48-year-old officer was participating in the closed-circuit motorcycle race when the tragic incident occurred, the CSPD said in a Facebook post on May 15.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we must let the citizens of our City know that an off duty CSPD Officer was killed in a tragic motocross accident yesterday,” the post read. “Officer James “Jamie” Palaia…served with the Colorado Springs Police Department for 13 years.”

During his time with the CSPD, Officer Palaia served as a patrol officer and in the Motor Unit, the department said.

He also worked as a school resource officer at Liberty High School and at Mann, Jenkins, and Russell Middle Schools.

“It is with a heavy heart that I shared the news with you today that we lost our School Resource Officer, Jamie Palaia, in an accident yesterday,” Mann Middle School Principal Leah Segura said in a statement on May 15. “Officer Palaia was not only our SRO at Mann, but he was a colleague and friend to all of us.”

“We are grieving as a school community today, and we hold the Palaia family close to our hearts as they navigate this tremendous loss,” Segura wrote. “Time is never promised. Cherish gift of time with your loved ones today.”

The CSPD asked the community to “take a moment to honor Jamie” and to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Colorado Springs Police Department Officer James “Jamie” Palaia, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.

Just an aside. Doesn't he look a little large for motocross racing? He must have been hit by one I'm thinking.

So sick of you bootlickers referring to all cops as "heroes". If you didn't die in the line of duty, you aren't a hero. And frankly, you aren't even a hero unless you've saved some lives in the course of doing your job, you're just some revenue generating scumbag. Just because you have a job where you wear a uniform and badge and carry a gun and get a paycheck from the taxpayers doesn't make you a hero, you're just some guy that died like everyone else. Get over yourselves you egomaniacs.

James Palaria, rest in peace, brother. You have stood watch for a long time. Your brothers and sisters will continue doing the job, although with broken hearts knowing you are not at their back going forward.
