Hero Down: Colorado DOC Correctional Sgt. Joshua Voth Killed In Boiler Explosion

Colorado Department of Corrections Correctional Sergeant Joshua Voth died in the line of duty on Wednesday.

Canon City, CO – Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) Correctional Sergeant Joshua Voth died in the line of duty on Wednesday, when a boiler exploded at the facility where he was working.

The tragic incident occurred at the Fremont Correctional Facility just before noon, according to the Canon City Daily Record.

Canon City Area Fire Protection District firefighters responded to the scene and discovered that the boiler had suffered a catastrophic failure, The Pueblo Chieftain reported.

Sgt. Voth, 28, was treated at the scene before he was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance.

He later succumbed to his injuries.

The exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, DOC Public Information Officer Annie Skinner told the Canon City Daily Record.

Sgt. Voth worked as a Correctional Support Licensed Trade Supervisor at the prison, and was tasked with helping inmates learn trade skills.

He had been with the DOC since 2016.

“It is hard to put into words the level of sadness we all feel to have lost Josh,” DOC Executive Director Dean Williams said, according to the Canon City Daily Record. “His DOC family grieves with his wife, three precious children, and all of the friends and family who loved him.”

“He will be dearly missed, but he will never be forgotten. Our primary concern continues to be ensuring his family has the support they need, and that as a department we are able to band together during this tragic time,” Williams added.

A fundraising campaign established to help the young correctional sergeant’s family in the wake of their sudden loss has raised over $15,600 so far.

“No one was prepared for the loss of such a great man,” the page read.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Colorado Department of Corrections Correctional Sergeant Joshua Voth, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
