Hero Down: Clovis Police Captain Dan Sullivan Succumbs To Cancer

Clovis Police Captain Dan Sullivan served his department for 27 years.

Clovis, CA – Clovis Police Department (CPD) Captain Dan Sullivan died on Sunday, following a battle with cancer.

The 27-year veteran-of-the-force fought hard for several months after his diagnosis, the Clovis Police Department said in a press release on Sunday.

“Captain Sullivan lived life to the fullest both at home and as a law enforcement leader,” Clovis Police Chief Curt Fleming said. “The Citizens of Clovis have lost an outstanding public servant. Dan, you can rest knowing your brothers and sisters at the police department have it from here.”

Capt. Sullivan joined the CPD as a non-sworn police aide in 1992.

He went on to graduate from the police academy in 1994, and was subsequently sworn in as a full-time officer.

As he climbed through the ranks over the years, Capt. Sullivan also took on a multitude of various roles within the department.

He served as a defensive tactics instructor, field training officer and coordinator, drug recognition expert, narcotics detective, drug influence instructor, and was a longtime member of the SWAT unit, according to his department.

Capt. Sullivan and his partner, K9 Bear, also worked together in patrol.

“Most recently, Captain Sullivan was in command of the patrol division,” the CPD noted. “He was instrumental in the recent rebuilding of the K-9 unit and the construction of a new K-9 training facility.”

The captain discussed his passion for the K9 program during an interview with the Clovis Roundup in 2018.

“I’ve had the biggest, baddest gang members on calls and when you bring in a canine, they aren’t worried about the cops anymore, they are worried about what that dog is going to do,” Capt. Sullivan mused. “It changes the entire dynamics of the call…even a K9 unit arriving, well-marked with the stickers on the vehicle, calms everything down.”

In addition to his duties as the patrol division commander, Capt. Sullivan also oversaw the implementation of the CPD’s unmanned aerial vehicle and bodycam programs, according to the department.

“Captain Sullivan will be greatly missed by all of his Clovis Police Department Family,” the agency said. “Our hearts are with the Sullivan family during this very tough time.”

Capt. Sullivan leaves behind his wife and two young daughters, as well as his father and sister.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Clovis Police Department Captain Dan Sullivan, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
