Bell County Sheriff's Sergeant Robert Pettigrew served his department for over 27 years.

Lampasas County, TX – Bell County Sheriff’s Department (BCSD) Sergeant Robert Pettigrew died from natural causes at his home on Monday.

The 59-year-old sergeant was surrounded by his family at his residence when he passed away, KCEN reported.

Sgt. Pettigrew died just one day after his fellow officer, Deputy John Andrew Rhoden, 31, was fatally struck by an 18-wheeler while deploying spike strips to stop a fleeing driver.

“We're mourning the loss of another fine officer,” the BCSD said in a Facebook post on Monday. “RIP Sgt. Pettigrew.”

Sgt. Pettigrew began his BCSD career in March of 1993, KCEN reported.

He initially served as a correctional officer, and later worked as a deputy, D.A.R.E. officer, and operations sergeant.

“Please help us by keeping the Pettigrew family and the Rhoden family in your thoughts and prayers during this very trying time,” BCSD Lieutenant Robert Reinhard said in a press release, according to KWTX. “Our hearts go out to both families.”

The sheriff’s department parked a patrol SUV outside their office so citizens would have a place to honor both fallen deputies.

“The Bell County Sheriff’s Department has set up a memorial for those within the community to come and pay their respect for both Deputy John Rhoden and Sgt. Robert Pettigrew,” the department said in a Facebook post. “We invite those who would like to come out to use this location to show their support of these two local heroes.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of United States Department of Bell County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Robert Pettigrew, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
