Mountain Home, AR – Baxter County Sheriff Sergeant Eric Neal died unexpectedly on Jan. 25, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office did not report a cause of death. Sgt. Neal was 45 years old.

“It is with the utmost sorrow and a heavy heart that we have to announce the passing of one of our own,” the sheriff’s office posted on its Facebook page.

“Sheriff's Sgt. Eric Neal, who had been with the Sheriff's Office since 2001 and who had worked in law enforcement with other agencies prior to that, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last evening,” the post read.

At the time of his death, Sgt. Neal was the assistant jail administrator. During his time with the sheriff’s office, he had also been assigned to the patrol division and the criminal investigation division, and had worked as a police K9 handler, The Baxter Bulletin reported.

The Baxter County Sheriff’s Office announced they would be attending Sgt. Neal’s funeral and burial services on Jan. 30. The Facebook post said that the Arkansas State Police would be responding to service calls during that time.

“Sgt. Neal's passing leaves a void in the hearts and lives of those who knew him. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time. Arrangements are still pending,” the sheriff’s office posted.

The Baxter Bulletin said that Sgt. Neal could pick up almost any instrument, and learn to play it within a few minutes. He was known for his talent on the piano and trumpet.

Sgt. Neal is survived by his parents, Bob and Cherie Neal, and his fiancée, Elisha Sharp.

“Rest in peace my brother and thanks for your service!” James Cook posted on the sheriff’s Facebook page.
