Hero Down: Baltimore County PD K9 Miss Mutzy Rae Daisy Of Baltimore County Dies
Towson, MD – Baltimore County Police Department (BCPD) K9 Rae died unexpectedly from a medical condition on Dec. 23.
“It is with deep regret that the Baltimore County Police Department announces the sudden passing of the newest member of our K9 Unit, K9 Rae,” the BCPD said in a press release.
Officer Caprio was murdered in the line of duty on May 20, 2018, after she stumbled upon a burglary in progress while investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle, WJZ reported at the time.
Dawnta Harris, 17, slammed his stolen getaway vehicle into the four-year veteran-of-the-force when she tried to stop him and his accomplices.
He drove over her body then fled the scene, leaving skid marks on the street next to the dying officer.
Harris was sentenced to life in prison in connection with Officer Caprio’s brutal murder in August of 2019.
In late November, the BCPD announced that Officer Caprio’s family helped choose K9 Rae’s full name – K9 Miss Mutzy Rae Daisy of Baltimore County.
“Mutzy” was the name of Officer Caprio’s favorite childhood stuffed animal, and “Daisy” is the fallen officer’s mother’s name.
K9 Rae began training as a search and rescue bloodhound just four weeks before her sudden death, according to her department.
“Rae made a big impact on us all in the short time she was here. She will be missed by all of us, but especially by her family and handler,” the agency’s press release read. “Thank you, Rae, for your service to Baltimore County.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Baltimore County Police Department in the loss of K9 Rae.
