Hero Down: Aurora Police Department K9 Draco Succumbs To Cancer

Aurora Police Department K9 Draco was diagnosed with the untreatable condition just days prior.

Aurora, CO – Aurora Police Department (APD) K9 Draco succumbed to an aggressive form of brain cancer on June 1.

K9 Draco was diagnosed with the untreatable condition on May 30, The Gazette reported.

Despite “phenomenal care from our family at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital,” K9 Draco’s condition continued to deteriorate in the days that followed, the Aurora Police K9 Unit said in a Facebook post.

The APD opted to humanely euthanize K9 Draco to end his suffering, the K9 unit said.

K9 Draco passed away on June 1, just shy of his fifth birthday, KCNC reported.

“He was surrounded by mom and dad, many APD members and the excellent staff at Alameda East,” according to the APD K9 Unit.

The department said they have donated the devoted K9’s brain to research in order to “get some more concrete answers” about the aggressive disease.

“Hopefully through research and knowledge gained, Draco’s condition could be used to help other dogs,” the K9 unit added.

His cremated remains will be given to his partner, APD Officer Matt Green, and a memorial service will be held at a future date.

“We first want to say, from the bottom of our hearts, a very sincere and heartfelt thank you to everyone for the kind words, prayers and literally overwhelming support for Ofc Green, Draco and our unit,” the K9 Unit said. “We have heard from across the globe and we couldn't be more appreciative.”

“We cannot begin to express our gratitude and gratefulness for all the support,” the agency’s post read. “It truly is appreciated more than we can convey.”

K9 Draco served the APD’s explosive detection and patrol units for four years, KCNC reported.

“He was a true part of the APD Family,” Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz said. “Draco, thank you for serving Aurora and protecting your ‘person’ so well. Rest well my friend, we’ll take it from here.”
