Arizona Department of Public Safety K9 Ax was a member of the agency's Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit.

Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) K9 Ax died on July 8, following a brief illness.

The six-year-old Czech Shepard was diagnosed with an undisclosed illness in June, and passed away with his handler by his side, KTVK reported.

K9 Ax and his handler became certified as an explosive detection K9 team in February of 2016, and worked together in the DPS’s Explosives Ordnance Disposal Unit.

“[K9} Ax and his handler made an outstanding team with their work in bomb threat response, firearms detection, security details and public outreach,” the department said in a media release. “Ax quietly and diligently served the citizens of Arizona…He will be sorely missed.”

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey expressed his condolences in a tweet on July 13.

“Arizona is grateful for Ax’s service to our state,” the governor wrote.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Arizona Department of Public Safety in the loss of K9 Ax.
