Hero Down: Alabama DOC K9 Hooch Killed In Hit-And-Run While Tracking Fugitive

Alabama Department of Corrections K9 Hooch was killed in the line of duty on Oct. 10.

St. Clair County, AL – Alabama Department of Corrections (DOC) K9 Hooch was killed in the line of duty as he was tracking a St. Clair County Jail escapee on Oct. 10.

K9 Hooch, a seven-year-old beagle, tracked the fugitive to Interstate 20 as he was assisting the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office (SCCSO) with their search, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

His human partner asked SCCSO deputies to block interstate traffic so K9 Hooch and the tracking team could cross the roadway, but an approaching tractor-trailer was didn't stop in time.

The driver of the semi-truck swerved around another vehicle, then hit K9 Hooch, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

The driver failed to stop at the scene, and SCCSO deputies were able to get into position to pursue the fleeing vehicle.

It was unclear whether or not the escapee K9 Hooch had been tracking was apprehended.

“#ADOC is deeply saddened to share that while tracking a lead for a fellow law enforcement agency today, K-9 Officer Hooch the Beagle lost his life in the line of duty in a vehicle accident,” the DOC tweeted later in the evening. “We will miss you, Hooch.”

K9 Hooch spent his entire life serving the Alabama DOC, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

"Hooch was a dedicated and invaluable team member, responsible for more than 300 catches throughout his ADOC career," the DOC said in a Facebook post. "Please keep Lt. Hill and Lt. Stefaniak, Hooch’s handlers, and his entire St. Clair Correctional Facility family in your thoughts."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Alabama Department of Corrections, Lt. Hill, and Lt. Stefaniak in the loss of K9 Hooch.

These puppers show the kind of heart in their service that sets a standard to be aspired to. They love their two legged comrades, and they chase the task because it’s time to get it done. They identify with the living experience, as opposed to humans who interpret the experience as a projected concept. That’s why dogs are a mans best friend....they are sharing your moment because you are there to be shared with. Hooches exemplary example makes me ponder these things....

Apparently the trucker was traveling too fast to stop and had to swerve to miss a vehicle before striking K9 Hooch and leaving the scene. I hope they caught him and threw the book at him.

The truck driver was probably on high speed chicken feed or something. He's one reason I gave up driving. Because all the regs he's a coward and needs to be taken out of the truck permanently. If he's driving a company truck let the company pay for a new K 9 police . It's their fault to.

A f'n dog runs out in front of a tractor trailer and you a-holes think he should get prison time. You're all ridiculous.

And you cops wouldn't give a flying shit about shooting or running my dog over. You're f'n hypocrites.

So the policemen allowed the dog on the interstate before they had blocked off traffic. Handler needs fired for that level of incompetence.

Glad they didn't need the k9 unit to catch the fugitive after all.

My idea is that replace the K9 unit with a heatseeking drone. Cheaper and more effective.

Norman vincent Peale wrote this in his book How to win Friends and Influence People...

"Dogs are genuinely thrilled to see their human companions return, and shower their friend with love, expecting nothing in return. The pup is simply excited to see it’s master and has no inhibition about displaying that excitement."

The thing that breaks my heart about dogs dying in the line of duty, is that they didn't make the decision to risk their lives for others. We did, but they do it naturally.
