Hero Down: 27-Year-Old NYPD Officer Shane Sullivan Dies Of Medical Emergency

New York Police Officer Shane Sullivan was driving home from work when the medical emergency struck.

The Bronx, NY – New York Police Department (NYPD) Officer Shane “Sully” Sullivan died in a car crash after he suffered a medical emergency while driving home after his shift on Aug. 24.

The 27-year-old officer was driving along Sedgwick Avenue near the Jerome Park Reservoir just after midnight when the medical emergency struck, the New York Daily News reported.

He fell unconscious, and his vehicle veered off of the roadway before it slammed into a tree.

Emergency medical personnel rushed Officer Sullivan to North Central Bronx Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the New York Daily News reported.

The sudden medical event is believed to have been a heart attack.

“Our hearts are truly heavy today as we mourn the loss of Police Officer Shane Sullivan,” the NYPD’s 43rd Precinct said in a Facebook post. “’Sully’ was a young, kind, and humble Officer who will be missed by all who knew him. We also keep his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Officer Sullivan joined the NYPD in October of 2015, and was serving as a traffic safety officer at the time of his death.

“Shane will always be remembered for his love of and closeness to his family, his great sense of humor, his bright intellect and calm demeanor,” his obituary read. “His untimely death has saddened his loved ones, his police family and everyone who was privileged to have been in his life.”

Officer Sullivan leaves behind his parents and siblings, as well as his grandparents, nieces, nephews, and many friends and extended family members.

He was laid to rest on Thursday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of New York Police Department Officer Shane “Sully” Sullivan, both blood and blue. Thank you for your service.

Rest easy, hero. We’ll hold the line from here.
