Fugitive Tries To Stab Police K9's Eyes Out

Baytown, TX – A 23-year-old woman was arrested July 30 after she tried to stab out the eyes of a police K9 with an eyebrow trimmer.

Abigail Martinez, 23, was wanted on a felony drug warrant when police found her in a trailer, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

A Baytown Police Department officer ordered Martinez to come out but received no response. When police entered through the unlocked front door, they found Martinez’ uncle, Felipe, laying on a couch.

Police detained Felipe while looking for Abigail. She was hiding in a back bedroom and did not respond to requests to come out.

The police then warned that they were sending their award-winning K9 X to get her if she continued to refuse orders, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

When Abigail Martinez still refused to come out, X went in and got her. According to police, she was hiding under several blankets and pillows in the back bedroom.

Abigail Martinez used a pair of hard plastic eyebrow trimmers that were about 5-inches in length to stab X right below both eyes.

X’s handler Corporal Jeremy Stevens noticed puncture wounds under each eye and took X to a local veterinarian. X was treated and back to working the same day.

Abigail Martinez was arrested on felony drug charges as well as interference with a police service dog, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Interfering with a police service dog is a felony in Texas.

She was held in jail on no bond.

Felipe Martinez was also arrested on outstanding local traffic warrants and taken to jail.

“They’re just like any of our uniform-wearing brothers and sisters,” Baytown Police Lieutenant Steve Dorris told KPRC-TV . “They have a job to do. They serve a purpose, a role in our organization and a lot of organizations around the country. Their life is just as valuable as ours.”

K9 X and his partner Cpl. Stevens were recently awarded the Top Patrol Dog Team at the 22nd annual Dothan Police Department K-9 Training Seminar and Competition. The contest was held in Dothan, Alabama from Feb. 5 -9. There were 50 dog teams from Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Texas.

K9 X is a 7-year veteran of the department and has been teamed with Cpl. Stevens the past five years. K9 X is trained in both narcotics detection and patrol functions.
